What to Pack for London in Summer

London is one of the most interesting and stylish cities in the world. Each year, the capital of the United Kingdom attracts nearly 20 million visitors to see Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, to ride the double-decker buses, and to visit the legendary Harrod’s.

If you’re one of those lucky people who has plans to visit London this summer, you might be wondering just what you pack for your trip to the Big Smoke.

And unfortunately, this isn’t an easy question to answer.

The weather in London is unpredictable, to say the least: one minute you’re cruising the streets with the hot, bright beams of the sun blasting down on you, and the next minute you’re running for cover because the skies have opened unleashing a torrent of rain upon you.

These shifts in weather can make it difficult to pack for a day, weekend or week long trip, but if you can remember to tuck these six pieces into your bags, you should be prepared for almost anything Mother Nature throws your way.

For those blisteringly hot days, don’t try and fight it, slip into your favorite sundress, slather on the sunscreen, and enjoy wandering around London and seeing the sights. Not only will you feel cute as a button in your sundress as you stroll through the city and sip tea, but you’ll stay cool as the temperatures rise.

Our Favorites:

Light Denim

For those cooler days, opt for a pair of slim fit or skinny ankle length jeans. These will protect you from the elements, whether they be sun, rain or who knows what Mother Nature might throw your way.

Pair your denim with a lightweight top (short sleeved or sleeveless, it’s up to you) and you’ll be good to go for a day of exploring!

Our Favorites:

Cardigans are one of the most versatile pieces you can add to any wardrobe. And, they are the perfect outfit topper when you’re exploring London, providing an extra layer of warmth for those moments the sun ducks behind the clouds or you’re hit with a gust of wind while walking along the Thames.

Our Favorites:

Rain coat

Unfortunately, there is a very good chance you will encounter some gray skies and rain during your time in London, no matter how short your visit, so it’s always good to be prepared and pack a lightweight rain coat in your bag or suitcase.

Our Favorites:

Comfy Flats

Yes, we all love to look fashionable when we travel, but there’s nothing less fashionable than hobbling around in shoes that hurt your feet, legs, back, etc. That’s why I opt for a stylish but comfortable pair of flats, either low-rise converse sneakers or a pair of Crocs ballet flats. Both of these options go with any outfit, from sundresses to jeans, and can take you almost anywhere in the city to almost any activity.

Our Favorites:

Cross-Body Bag

London is a busy city. Keep yourself and your personal belongings safe by wearing a cross-body bag with a zipper close. This will help keep your wallet, cards, phone, and documents safe from pickpocketers, so you can strut confidently through Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square.

Our Favorites:

ALWAYS carry an umbrella with you. Regardless of how hot and dry the meteorologists predict the day will be, make sure that your new umbrella best friend is in your bag when you start your day. You really don’t want to risk looking like a drowned rat on that chance meeting with Prince Harry, do you?!

Our Favorites:

It won’t always rain while you’re in London, so make sure you have a stylish pair of sunnies tucked into your bag. Not only will you look stylish, mysterious and oh-so-cool but you’ll protect your eyes from those harmful UVA/UVB rays.

Our Favorites:

London is a fabulous city. There are many reasons it’s the number one tourist destinations in the entire world. From fabulous museums to unique attractions, London has it all! By making sure you bring these six items with you, you’ll be able to enjoy the best of London while feeling cute and comfortable, regardless of the weather.
